Reading

Reading is done every day and is an integral aspect of the learning process in our classroom.

Contrary to popular belief reading is not done in the reading book only. But rather is covered in ALL subject areas including Mathematics, Art, Drama, Science etc.

Five (5) Essential Components Of Reading

Phonemic Awareness - the ability to hear and manipulate sounds in spoken words.

Alphabetic Principle (phonics) - the ability to associate sounds with letters and to use those sounds to read and spell words.

Accuracy and Fluency (effortless) Reading of Connected Text- the ability to correctly read words with no noticeable cognitive or mental effort.

Vocabulary Development - the ability to understand and use words to acquire and convey meaning


5.

Comprehension - the complex cognitive process of gaining understanding and meaning in text.
